Wengen hosts the Lauberhorn, one of alpine skiing’s oldest World Cup races.
The Lauberhorn races take place near Wengen in Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland. The downhill course is famous for its exceptional length, high speeds, and demanding sections, including the Hundschopf jump and the Kernen-S turn. The race is traditionally part of the men’s Alpine Ski World Cup calendar.
The event’s history predates the World Cup. Lauberhorn races began in 1930, while the first Alpine Ski World Cup season was held in 1967. The course’s combination of terrain and speed has made victory there especially prestigious among downhill specialists.
Wengen is sometimes confused with Kitzbühel, Austria, which hosts the Hahnenkamm races, another celebrated World Cup meeting. The Lauberhorn is associated with Wengen; the Hahnenkamm downhill is associated with Kitzbühel. Both are landmark races, but they are held in different countries.
