The Swedish music group that recorded the song used in the Caramelldansen meme was Caramell. The song, also titled “Caramelldansen,” appeared on the group’s second album, Supergott, released in 2001.
Caramell combined the singers Malin Sundström and Katia Löfgren with producers Jorge “Vasco” Vasconcelo and Juha “Millboy” Myllylä. The group broke up in 2002, before the song became an international Internet phenomenon.
The meme took off after a sped-up remix was paired with a short Flash animation of characters from the Japanese visual novel Popotan performing a hip-swinging dance. The high-pitched chorus and looping choreography spread through 4chan, Japanese video sites, YouTube, and fan-made animations during the mid-to-late 2000s.
The answer is sometimes confused with Caramella Girls, a virtual act later created to promote the song, or with other Eurodance groups such as Aqua and Toy-Box. Those acts did not record the original Caramell track.
