The concept began circulating online in the late 2000s and was popularized through Walsh’s blog. Garfield creator Jim Davis approved the project, and Ballantine Books published an official Garfield Minus Garfield collection in October 2008. That edition placed altered strips alongside the originals and included contributions associated with Davis.
A small wrinkle causes occasional confusion: some versions also remove other characters, such as Odie or Nermal, when they appear in a strip. Those edits do not change the defining premise. The name refers specifically to removing Garfield from his own comic, while the remaining artwork and dialogue expose the original strip’s underlying structure in an unexpected way.
