The Swedish group that released the 1976 disco-pop single “Dancing Queen” was ABBA.
Written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Stig Anderson, “Dancing Queen” became the lead single from ABBA’s fourth studio album, Arrival. It was recorded in 1975 and released in Sweden on August 16, 1976, before spreading across Europe and other major music markets.
The song blends American disco influences with ABBA’s polished Europop style. Its layered vocals were supplied by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, while Andersson and Ulvaeus shaped the arrangement and production. The group drew inspiration from the dance-floor sound of records such as George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby.”
“Dancing Queen” became ABBA’s only U.S. number-one single and topped charts in many other countries. It is often mistaken for a song by another European dance act, but Ace of Base, A-ha, and Boney M. are separate groups with different catalogs and histories.
