The French group that released the disco single “D.I.S.C.O.” in 1979 was Ottawan.
Ottawan was formed in France in 1979 by producer-songwriters Daniel Vangarde and Jean Kluger. The duo was fronted by Patrick Jean-Baptiste and Annette Eltice, and “D.I.S.C.O.” became their debut single. Although first recorded in French, the song is especially associated with its English-language version.
The title comes from the chorus, which spells out the word as an acrostic: “D” for delirious, “I” for incredible, “S” for superficial and “C” for complicated, followed by repeated “oh-oh-oh” vocals. This playful structure helped make the song instantly recognizable.
A common mix-up is confusing Ottawan with other European disco acts such as Boney M. or La Bionda. Ottawan followed “D.I.S.C.O.” with another major hit, “Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart),” which reached No. 3 in the United Kingdom in 1981.
