Which 1978 disco film features Donna Summer performing "Last Dance"?

The story behind the answer

The 1978 disco film featuring Donna Summer performing “Last Dance” is Thank God It’s Friday.

Directed by Robert Klane, Thank God It’s Friday is a musical comedy set around a Los Angeles disco during the height of the late-1970s dance craze. Donna Summer plays Nicole, an aspiring singer who gets the chance to perform at the club. Her climactic rendition of “Last Dance” became the film’s defining musical moment.

Paul Jabara wrote the song, with production and arrangement associated with Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. The recording begins as a slower ballad before building into an uptempo disco number, mirroring Nicole’s on-screen breakthrough. The song was released on the film’s triple-album soundtrack.

“Last Dance” became much bigger than a movie tie-in. It reached number three on the U.S. singles chart and won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Summer also won the Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female. The film is sometimes confused with other disco-era movies such as Car Wash, Xanadu or Can’t Stop the Music, but none features this performance.
