Which support championship uses Group Rally3 cars in its current format? The answer is WRC3.
WRC3 is the third-tier support championship of the FIA World Rally Championship, designed largely for privateer crews. Its current identity took shape after the FIA reorganised the rallying ladder: the modern WRC3 format began in 2020, and from 2022 it became a championship specifically for Group Rally3 cars.
Rally3 cars are four-wheel-drive machines built to less costly and less powerful regulations than Rally2 cars. WRC3 crews compete on the same rallies as the main WRC field, normally running after WRC2 competitors. They can nominate selected rounds for championship points, making the series more accessible than the premier class.
A common mix-up is Junior WRC. Junior WRC has also used Rally3 machinery, including Ford Fiesta Rally3 cars supplied through an arrive-and-drive programme, but it is a separate age-focused championship. WRC2, by contrast, is primarily associated with faster Rally2 cars.
