Omega Force’s Dragon Quest Builders 2 experience helped inspire Pokémon Pokopia’s development partnership.
Game Freak wanted to make a Pokémon game in which players could create habitats and shape the environment. Because Game Freak had less experience with sandbox games, Pokémon’s developers looked for a partner familiar with that style of design.
Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force was selected to co-develop Pokopia, partly because of its work on similar construction-focused games, including Dragon Quest Builders 2. That background helped support Pokopia’s building, crafting, and environmental restoration systems.
The relationship is sometimes described imprecisely as “Square Enix developing Pokopia,” because Dragon Quest Builders 2 is a Square Enix series. However, the relevant Pokopia partner was Omega Force, a Koei Tecmo studio. Game Freak remained the Pokémon franchise developer and co-developer.
