Omega Force’s experience with Dragon Quest Builders 2 helped explain its role in Pokémon Pokopia.
Game Freak conceived Pokopia as a Pokémon spin-off centered on creating and cultivating habitats. Because Game Freak lacked experience in the sandbox genre, Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force was chosen to co-develop the project. The Pokémon Company recommended Omega Force partly because of its previous work on similar construction-focused games.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 is especially relevant because it combines exploration, gathering, construction, and settlement development. Those ideas overlap with Pokopia’s systems, although Pokopia adapts them to Pokémon habitats, crafting, environmental restoration, and befriending rather than simply reproducing the earlier game.
Omega Force is a studio of Koei Tecmo, while Game Freak is the other co-developer. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company published the game in their respective publishing roles, so they should not be mistaken for the studio whose sandbox experience prompted the partnership.
