Which structure connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea?

The story behind the answer

The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea.

Located in Egypt, the canal provides a direct maritime route between the Atlantic and Indian Ocean regions. Ships using it avoid sailing around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, greatly reducing the distance between Europe and Asia.

The modern canal was officially opened in November 1869 after about a decade of construction. It was built under the direction of the Suez Canal Company, with Ferdinand de Lesseps as a leading promoter. Unlike the Panama Canal, the Suez Canal has no lock system because the Mediterranean and Red Sea are close enough in level for a sea-level passage.

The canal was nationalized by Egypt in 1956. A major expansion completed in 2015 added a parallel section and widened or deepened other parts, allowing more two-way traffic.
