Which strait was the site of the 1905 naval Battle of Tsushima?
Answer
Tsushima Strait
Answer
Tsushima Strait
Tsushima Strait was the site of the 1905 naval Battle of Tsushima.
The strait lies between the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese archipelago, with routes through the Tsushima Islands. It forms part of the passage between the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea and is commonly divided into western and eastern channels.
During the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese fleet defeated Russia’s Baltic Fleet in the strait on 27–28 May 1905. The victory demonstrated Japan’s emergence as a major naval power and helped lead to the Treaty of Portsmouth later that year.
Tsushima Strait is sometimes broadly called the Korea Strait, but the names are not always interchangeable in geographic usage. Tsushima refers especially to the channels around the Tsushima Islands.
