Which strait connects the Bali Sea with the Indian Ocean between Bali and Lombok?

The story behind the answer

The Lombok Strait connects the Bali Sea with the Indian Ocean between the Indonesian islands of Bali and Lombok.

It is one of the principal passages through the Indonesian archipelago and forms part of an important route between the Indian and Pacific oceans. The strait is also a major boundary in marine biogeography: the deep water prevents many Asian and Australian species from crossing easily.

Naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace identified this pattern, now called the Wallace Line. The line runs between Bali and Lombok and marks a sharp change in animal distribution despite the islands’ close proximity.

The Lombok Strait is deeper than the nearby Bali Strait and is therefore used by larger vessels. It should not be confused with the Sunda Strait, which lies farther west between Sumatra and Java.
