Which strait separates Florida from the island of Cuba?
Answer
Florida Straits
Answer
Florida Straits
The Florida Straits separate the Florida Keys and Florida peninsula from the island of Cuba.
The straits connect the Gulf of Mexico with the Atlantic Ocean and are part of the route through which the Loop Current flows. This current becomes the Gulf Stream after passing between Florida and the Bahamas, helping transport warm tropical water northward.
The waterway is about 150 kilometres wide at its narrowest point between Key West and Cuba. It is also very deep in places, creating important routes for commercial ships and oceanographic research.
The Florida Straits are distinct from the Yucatán Channel, which lies west of Cuba between the island and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Both connect to the Gulf of Mexico, but they are separate passages.
