Which strait separates Vancouver Island from mainland British Columbia?

The story behind the answer

The Strait of Georgia separates Vancouver Island from mainland British Columbia.

This Pacific waterway lies between Vancouver Island and the coast of British Columbia, with numerous islands, including the Gulf Islands, along its southern section. It forms part of the inland marine waters of the Pacific Northwest.

The strait was named in 1792 by British explorer George Vancouver in honour of King George III. Its southern end connects with Puget Sound through several channels, while its northern waters approach Johnstone Strait.

It is often confused with the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which lies south of Vancouver Island and connects the Pacific Ocean with the waters around Georgia Strait.
