Which strait separates Taiwan from the northern Philippines?

The story behind the answer

The Luzon Strait separates Taiwan from the northern Philippines.

It lies between Taiwan and Luzon, the largest island of the Philippines, and connects the South China Sea with the Philippine Sea. The passage is part of a complex island region rather than one uniformly narrow gap. Important channels within or near the strait include the Bashi Channel and the Balintang and Babuyan channels.

The area is tectonically active because it lies near the boundary of major oceanic and continental plates. It is also an important route for submarine communications cables and for ocean currents moving between the South China Sea and the western Pacific.

The Luzon Strait is not the same as the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwan Strait separates Taiwan from mainland China, whereas the Luzon Strait is south of Taiwan and lies between Taiwan and the Philippines. This distinction is a frequent source of confusion.
