Which strait separates Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula from Alaska?

The story behind the answer

The Bering Strait is the strait that separates Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula from Alaska.

It connects the Arctic Ocean’s Chukchi Sea with the Pacific Ocean’s Bering Sea. The Diomede Islands sit near its middle: Big Diomede belongs to Russia, while Little Diomede belongs to the United States.

The strait is named after Vitus Bering, the Danish-born explorer whose Russian expedition reached the area in 1728. During the last Ice Age, lower sea levels exposed Beringia, a broad land region that connected Asia and North America.

The international date line passes between the Diomede Islands, which is why the islands are sometimes called Tomorrow Island and Yesterday Isle. Despite their short distance, the two islands lie in different countries and calendar dates.
