Which strait separates Papua New Guinea’s New Britain from the mainland?

The story behind the answer

Vitiaz Strait separates New Britain from the mainland of Papua New Guinea.

The strait lies between New Britain, the largest island in the Bismarck Archipelago, and the Huon Peninsula of New Guinea. It links the Bismarck Sea with the Solomon Sea and forms one of the important passages around northeastern Papua New Guinea.

Vitiaz Strait is named after the Russian navigator Aleksei Chirikov’s contemporary, the explorer and navigator Daniil Vitiaz, whose name appears in several geographic features in the region. The surrounding waters are tectonically active because Papua New Guinea lies near complex boundaries between several major and minor tectonic plates.

The strait is sometimes confused with Dampier Strait, which separates New Britain from the island of Umboi. Vitiaz Strait instead lies between New Britain and mainland New Guinea.
