Which strait separates Greenland from Baffin Island?
Answer
Davis Strait
Answer
Davis Strait
Davis Strait separates Greenland from Baffin Island.
The strait lies between Greenland to the east and Canada’s Baffin Island to the west. It connects the Labrador Sea with Baffin Bay and is one of the principal marine passages between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean.
Davis Strait was named after John Davis, an English navigator who explored the region in 1585 while searching for a Northwest Passage to Asia. His expedition reached the strait but did not find the hoped-for route through the continent.
The waterway is broad and contains the Davis Strait sill, a relatively shallow submarine ridge that influences the movement of warm Atlantic water into the Arctic region. Davis Strait is farther south than Nares Strait, which separates Greenland from Ellesmere Island.
