Which strait links the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and Morocco?

The story behind the answer

The Strait of Gibraltar is the strait that links the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and Morocco.

The waterway lies between southern Europe and northwestern Africa, with the Rock of Gibraltar on its northern side. It is the only natural sea passage connecting the Mediterranean directly with the Atlantic Ocean.

The strait has been strategically important since antiquity. Ancient Greeks associated the area with the Pillars of Hercules, traditionally identified with the Rock of Gibraltar and Jebel Musa in Morocco. Modern shipping uses the route to move between Atlantic ports and the Mediterranean.

The Strait of Gibraltar is narrower than many people expect, but it is not the same as the Strait of Messina or the Bosporus. Its western entrance opens into the Atlantic, while its eastern side leads into the Alboran Sea, the Mediterranean’s westernmost sub-basin.
