Which strait lies between Greenland and Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic?

The story behind the answer

Nares Strait lies between Greenland and Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic.

The strait runs from the northern end of Baffin Bay toward the Lincoln Sea. It is named after George Nares, the British naval officer who led the British Arctic Expedition of 1875–1876. The expedition used ships HMS Alert and HMS Discovery while attempting to reach the North Pole.

Nares Strait is made up of several named sections, including Smith Sound, Kane Basin, Kennedy Channel, Hall Basin and Robeson Channel. Strong currents and drifting sea ice make navigation difficult, especially in the northern reaches.

The passage is sometimes confused with Davis Strait, which lies much farther south between Greenland and Baffin Island. Nares Strait instead separates Greenland from Canada’s Ellesmere Island and forms part of the boundary between the two countries.
