Which strait lies between Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula and Norway?

The story behind the answer

Skagerrak lies between Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula and Norway.

It is a sea passage connecting the North Sea with the Kattegat, which in turn leads toward the Baltic Sea. Sweden forms the northeastern side of the wider Skagerrak region, while Jutland forms its southwestern boundary. The Norwegian port of Kristiansand is one of the important settlements near its northern end.

The name is related to Skagen, the northernmost town of Jutland, and a Dutch nautical term meaning roughly “open waterway.” Skagerrak is deeper and more open than the neighboring Kattegat, which lies between Denmark and Sweden.

The area has long been significant for North Sea commerce and naval operations. Its waters are also known for strong winds and substantial wave conditions, especially during winter storms. It is a sea, rather than a narrow strait in the strictest geographic sense.
