Which strait connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman?
Answer
Strait of Hormuz
Answer
Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
The waterway lies between Iran to the north and the Musandam Peninsula of Oman and the United Arab Emirates to the south. It is about 167 kilometres long, although its narrowest navigable section is much smaller. The strait is a crucial route for tankers carrying oil and natural gas from Gulf states to world markets.
International shipping uses designated traffic-separation lanes. Under the usual arrangement, vessels entering and leaving the Persian Gulf follow separate lanes, with a buffer zone between them. The island of Qeshm, controlled by Iran, is the largest island in the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is sometimes confused with Bab-el-Mandeb, which links the Gulf of Aden with the Red Sea. Hormuz is east of the Arabian Peninsula; Bab-el-Mandeb is at its southwestern end.
