Which strait connects the Pacific Ocean with the Strait of Georgia?

The story behind the answer

The Strait of Juan de Fuca connects the Pacific Ocean with the Strait of Georgia.

This waterway runs between Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, and the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, United States. It extends from the open Pacific eastward to the waters around the southern end of Vancouver Island, where it connects with the Strait of Georgia and Puget Sound.

The strait was named after Juan de Fuca, the Greek pilot who claimed to have sailed for Spain, although historians debate whether his reported voyage corresponds to the waterway. British and Spanish expeditions later surveyed the region in the eighteenth century.

The international boundary follows much of the strait’s centre, but the name applies to the geographic waterway on both sides. It is often confused with the Strait of Georgia, which lies farther north between Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia.
