Which strait connects the Celebes Sea with the Java Sea between Borneo and Sulawesi?
Answer
Makassar Strait
Answer
Makassar Strait
The Makassar Strait connects the Celebes Sea with the Java Sea between Borneo and Sulawesi.
The strait runs north to south through Indonesia, separating the island of Borneo to the west from Sulawesi to the east. It is a major route through the Indonesian archipelago and forms part of the deep-water passage known as the Indonesian Throughflow, which carries Pacific Ocean water toward the Indian Ocean.
Makassar, a major port on Sulawesi, gives the strait its name. The passage has long supported regional trade, fishing, and navigation between island communities. Its deep central waters also make it significant for modern shipping.
Makassar Strait is distinct from Sunda Strait, which lies between Sumatra and Java, and Lombok Strait, which lies east of Bali. All are Indonesian passages, but they occupy different positions in the archipelago.
