Which strait connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov?

The story behind the answer

The Kerch Strait connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov.

The strait lies between the Kerch Peninsula of Crimea to the west and Russia’s Taman Peninsula to the east. It is about 40 kilometres long and between roughly 3.1 and 15 kilometres wide. Its shallow waters have long made the passage important for regional shipping and fishing.

The ancient Greeks called the waterway the Cimmerian Bosporus, distinguishing it from the Bosphorus near Istanbul. The modern name comes from the city of Kerch, located near the western side. The Crimean Bridge crosses the strait and carries road and rail traffic.

The Kerch Strait is not another name for the Bosphorus. The Bosphorus joins the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, while the Kerch Strait leads into the much smaller Sea of Azov, a separate northern extension of the Black Sea system.
