Which strait connects the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara?
Answer
Dardanelles
Answer
Dardanelles
The Dardanelles is the strait that connects the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara.
It runs through northwestern Turkey and forms the southwestern part of the Turkish Straits system. The Bosporus continues the route from the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea, so ships can travel between the Aegean and Black Sea through both straits.
The waterway was known in antiquity as the Hellespont. Greek mythology places the story of Hero and Leander here, and the ancient city of Troy stood near its Asian shore. The Gallipoli peninsula forms much of the European side.
The Dardanelles was central to the 1915 Gallipoli campaign during the First World War. Its name is sometimes incorrectly used for the Bosporus, but the two waterways are separated by the Sea of Marmara.
