Which Star Trek film won the 1987 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation?

The story behind the answer

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home won the 1987 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation.

The award recognized the 1986 film’s time-travel adventure, in which Admiral Kirk and his crew travel from the 23rd century to 1986 San Francisco. They must find humpback whales whose songs can answer a mysterious probe threatening Earth.

Directed by Leonard Nimoy, the film combines science-fiction stakes with environmental themes and comedy arising from the crew’s unfamiliarity with modern Earth. It became one of the most commercially successful Star Trek films and received a Hugo nomination alongside other prominent speculative-fiction works.

The Hugo Awards are presented by members of Worldcon, and the Best Dramatic Presentation category has historically honored film, television and other dramatic productions. The 1987 award therefore followed the film’s 1986 theatrical release rather than indicating a 1987 Star Trek movie.
