Which Star Trek film was the first to be directed by Leonard Nimoy?

The story behind the answer

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock was the first Star Trek film directed by Leonard Nimoy.

Nimoy had played Spock since the original Star Trek television series and had directed Star Trek III before also directing Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. The third film continues directly from the events of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, in which Spock dies after sacrificing himself to save the Enterprise.

The story reveals that Spock's katra, or spirit, has been transferred to Dr. Leonard McCoy. Kirk and his crew learn that the Genesis Device has regenerated Spock's body on the planet Genesis. They must return there, despite orders and political pressure, while facing Klingon commander Kruge.

The film is often confused with The Voyage Home because Nimoy directed both movies and appeared as Spock in them. The earlier sequel, The Wrath of Khan, was directed by Nicholas Meyer. Nimoy's work behind the camera helped establish a continuing tradition of cast members directing Star Trek films.
