Which stadium hosted the 1950 FIFA World Cup final match in Rio de Janeiro?
Answer
Maracanã Stadium
Answer
Maracanã Stadium
Maracanã Stadium hosted the decisive 1950 FIFA World Cup match in Rio de Janeiro.
The 1950 tournament did not use a conventional knockout final. Instead, a four-team final group decided the champion, and Brazil faced Uruguay in the last match at the newly built Maracanã on 16 July 1950. Uruguay won 2–1, producing the famous Maracanazo upset.
Brazil led after Friaça scored early in the second half, but Juan Alberto Schiaffino equalized and Alcides Ghiggia scored the winner. The result gave Uruguay its second World Cup title and stunned a home crowd estimated at roughly 200,000 people.
Calling the match a final is common shorthand, but technically it was the final fixture of the championship group. Maracanã later hosted major events and remains one of Brazil’s best-known football grounds.
