Which Spanish writer shared the 1904 Nobel Prize in Literature with Frédéric Mistral?

The story behind the answer

José Echegaray shared the 1904 Nobel Prize in Literature with Frédéric Mistral.

Echegaray was a Spanish civil engineer, mathematician, economist, politician, and dramatist. His career was unusually broad: he served in government and helped establish modern mathematical physics in Spain while also writing more than 60 plays.

The Nobel committee recognized his numerous compositions that had “in an individual and original manner revived the great traditions of the Spanish drama.” Frédéric Mistral, a French poet writing in Provençal, received the other half of the prize for his poetry.

The 1904 award was one of the occasions when the literature prize was divided between two laureates. Echegaray is sometimes mistaken for Jacinto Benavente, another Spanish dramatist who actually won the Nobel Prize in 1922.
