Which Spanish sports honor did Serena Williams receive in 2025?

Serena Williams received the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports in 2025.

The Spanish Princess of Asturias Foundation announced Williams as the 2025 sports laureate on 28 May 2025. The award recognizes internationally significant achievements, and the jury cited both her extraordinary tennis record and her advocacy for gender equality and equal opportunity in sport and society.

The honor is presented in Oviedo, capital of the Principality of Asturias. It was known as the Prince of Asturias Awards from 1981 through 2014, then adopted its current name after Felipe VI became king and his daughter Leonor became Princess of Asturias. The awards ceremony traditionally takes place at Oviedo’s Teatro Campoamor.

Williams’s selection followed a career featuring 23 Grand Slam singles titles, four Olympic gold medals and a career Golden Slam. The award’s formal name includes “for Sports,” but “Princess of Asturias Award” is the canonical short answer used in English references. It is not the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award or a Spanish tennis-media prize such as Marca Legend Award.
