Which sovereign state has the highest population density in the world?

The story behind the answer

Which sovereign state has the highest population density in the world? Monaco has the highest population density of any sovereign state.

Monaco is a tiny independent city-state on the French Riviera, squeezed between France and the Mediterranean Sea. Its territory covers roughly 2 square kilometres, while its population is close to 40,000, producing a density of roughly 19,000 people per square kilometre in commonly used recent comparisons. High-rise housing and intensive land use are essential because buildable space is so limited.

The wording “sovereign state” matters. Places such as Macau and Hong Kong can rank above Monaco in some tables, but they are special administrative regions of China rather than independent countries. Monaco is also often confused with Vatican City, which is smaller but has a far smaller resident population. Singapore, another sovereign city-state, is much larger in area and therefore less densely populated.

Density figures vary slightly by source and year because population estimates and area calculations change. Nevertheless, Monaco remains the standard canonical answer when the question asks for the world’s most densely populated sovereign country.
