What total population did Nigeria's 2006 census record?

The story behind the answer

Nigeria’s 2006 census recorded a total population of 140,431,790.

The count was published by Nigeria’s National Population Commission after the 2006 population and housing census. Its national total combined 71,345,488 males with 69,086,302 females, producing the recorded figure of 140,431,790.

The census was conducted 14 years and four months after the previous 1991 census. The interval helps explain why Nigeria’s reported annual exponential growth rate between the two censuses was approximately 3.18%. Kano was the most populous state in the published table, with 9,401,288 people, followed by Lagos with 9,113,605.

The figure is sometimes confused with later population estimates, which are much higher because Nigeria continued to grow rapidly after 2006. It is also distinct from projections or unofficial estimates; this question asks specifically for the census total.
