What total population did Myanmar's 2014 census report?

The story behind the answer

Myanmar’s 2014 census reported a total population of 51,486,253.

The nationwide census was conducted from 30 March to 10 April 2014, with enumerators counting people at midnight on 29 March. Around 100,000 schoolteachers participated. The final headline total included people counted directly as well as estimates for some populations that could not be enumerated in areas including northern Rakhine, Kachin and Kayin states.

That inclusion explains why other figures sometimes appear in references to the same census. The provisional result was 51,419,420, while the directly enumerated population was lower still. The 51,486,253 figure is the final total presented by the census article and is the appropriate answer to this question.

Yangon Region was the most populous region, with 7,355,075 people, while Kayah State was the least populous, with 286,738. The census was particularly significant because it was Myanmar’s first nationwide census in roughly three decades, following the 1983 census.
