What resident population did Vietnam's 2019 census record?

The story behind the answer

Vietnam’s 2019 census recorded a resident population of 96,208,984.

The official reference date was 1 April 2019. Conducted by Vietnam’s General Statistics Office, the census covered all 63 provinces and municipalities and involved about 147,000 enumerators. It was the country’s fifth national census since reunification and used digital technology extensively.

The total represented an increase of roughly 10.4 million people since the 2009 census. Vietnam’s average annual growth rate over the decade was about 1.14%, slower than in the previous intercensal period. The population was unevenly distributed, with major concentrations in the Red River Delta and the Southeast.

A common mix-up is the figure 85,846,997, which is associated with Vietnam’s 2009 census rather than 2019. The 2019 count also recorded 33,059,735 urban residents and 63,149,249 rural residents.
