Which South African prison held Mahatma Gandhi after his 1913 arrest?

The story behind the answer

Volksrust Prison held Mahatma Gandhi after his 1913 arrest in South Africa.

Gandhi was arrested during a campaign involving Indian workers and families who crossed provincial borders in defiance of discriminatory laws. The 1913 resistance became one of the major campaigns of his South African years.

He was imprisoned at Volksrust, a town in the Transvaal near the Natal border. His imprisonment formed part of a wider wave of arrests that drew international attention to the treatment of the Indian community.

Volksrust should not be confused with Robben Island, which became famous for imprisoning anti-apartheid figures decades later. Gandhi’s South African imprisonment occurred under an earlier colonial legal system.
