Which songwriter has been Elton John's main lyric-writing partner since 1967?

The story behind the answer

Bernie Taupin has been Elton John's main lyric-writing partner since 1967.

John and Taupin began working together after answering the same 1967 advertisement placed by Liberty Records. They quickly developed a distinctive method: Taupin wrote lyrics, while John composed music, usually without the two working in the same room. Their partnership produced hundreds of songs across more than five decades.

Taupin wrote the words for major John recordings including “Your Song,” “Rocket Man,” “Tiny Dancer,” and “Candle in the Wind.” Their collaboration is often described as one of popular music’s most successful songwriter partnerships. Tim Rice also worked with John on songs for The Lion King, but he was not John’s longstanding principal lyricist.
