Elton John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998. He received the honour for services to music and charitable services.
The ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace, where he was invested as a Knight Bachelor. His formal style thereafter became Sir Elton Hercules John, although he continued to perform and record under the familiar name Elton John.
The year can be confused with 1995, when John was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, giving him the title CBE. His knighthood came later, after many years of recording success and substantial charitable work, including his public campaigning and fundraising connected with HIV and AIDS.
