“Under the Sea” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song from Disney's 1989 The Little Mermaid.
Sebastian performs the song to persuade Ariel that life under the sea is better than life on land. Its Caribbean-influenced musical style, energetic animation, and large ensemble of sea creatures made it one of the film's defining sequences.
Alan Menken composed the music and Howard Ashman wrote the lyrics. At the 62nd Academy Awards, the song won Best Original Song, while Menken also won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for the film.
“Part of Your World” and “Kiss the Girl” are also major songs from the movie, but neither won the Oscar. “Under the Sea” additionally received the Grammy Award for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television.
