Sebastian and the sea creatures perform “Under the Sea” to persuade Ariel to remain underwater in Disney’s 1989 film The Little Mermaid.
Sebastian sings the number after Ariel becomes fascinated with the human world and begins spending time with Eric. The song contrasts the perceived dangers of life on land with the joy and abundance of life beneath the ocean. Its Caribbean-influenced rhythm and large ensemble arrangement make it one of the film’s signature musical sequences.
The song was written by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, adding to the film’s musical impact during the period often called the Disney Renaissance.
The title is sometimes confused with “Kiss the Girl,” which Sebastian performs later while encouraging Eric to kiss Ariel. “Under the Sea” is the earlier persuasive song centered on Ariel’s underwater home.
