Facebook changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms in October 2021.
The rebrand separated the parent company from Facebook, its original social-networking product, and emphasized the company’s broader ambitions in virtual and augmented reality. The company continued to operate Facebook alongside Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and other products.
Meta Platforms remains a major public company whose market capitalization is driven by advertising revenue, user engagement, artificial-intelligence investment, and expectations for future products. The stock ticker also changed from FB to META in 2022.
The name change did not mean Facebook disappeared. Facebook is still the name of the social network, while Meta is the corporate parent. This distinction matters when comparing company valuations with the value or reach of an individual platform.
