StockX was founded by Josh Luber in 2015 as a live marketplace for collectible shoes.
StockX introduced a stock-market-style model in which buyers place bids and sellers list asks. When the prices match, a transaction occurs. The platform then authenticates eligible products before sending them to the buyer, creating a structure different from a conventional person-to-person marketplace.
The company began with sneakers and later expanded into categories including streetwear, handbags, watches, and electronics. Its pricing charts made recent sale data visible to users, reinforcing the idea of sneakers as tradable consumer goods.
StockX is often confused with GOAT, another major sneaker marketplace. Both use authentication systems, but StockX is especially associated with its bid-and-ask trading model and market-data presentation.
