StockX, founded in Detroit in 2016, became known for verifying collectible shoes before resale.
The company was founded by Josh Luber, Greg Schwartz, Chris Kaufman, and Dan Gilbert. StockX built a stock-market-style marketplace in which buyers and sellers could place bids and asks, while products were sent through an authentication process before reaching buyers.
Sneakers were central to StockX’s identity, although the platform later expanded into categories such as streetwear, electronics, collectibles, and handbags. Its pricing model helped make resale values more visible by displaying transaction data and market movement.
GOAT, Flight Club, and Stadium Goods are separate sneaker-resale businesses. StockX is particularly associated with its Detroit origin, anonymous marketplace format, and comparison of product prices to financial-market terminology.
