Marty McFly wore the Nike Mag in Back to the Future Part II.
The 1989 film places Marty in the futuristic year 2015, where he receives a pair of fictional Nike shoes that automatically tighten around his feet. The shoes became one of the most recognizable examples of fictional footwear in cinema because their self-lacing feature presented a playful vision of future technology.
Nike later turned the film prop into a limited real-world release. In 2011, the company produced replicas of the Nike Mag without automatic self-lacing and used them to raise money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. In 2016, Nike released a smaller number of self-lacing versions called HyperAdapt 1.0-inspired Nike Mags, with proceeds again supporting Parkinson’s research.
The Nike Mag is often confused with the Nike Air Mag name used in discussions of the same fictional shoe. The model’s cultural importance comes less from athletic performance than from its connection to the film, science-fiction design, charitable releases, and the broader idea of wearable technology.
