The sneaker brand whose Chuck Taylor All-Stars were first produced in 1917 as the Non-Skids is Converse.
Converse developed the original basketball shoe in 1917 and marketed it as the Non-Skids. It had a canvas upper and rubber sole, features that remained central to the later All Star design. The shoe was redesigned after basketball player Charles “Chuck” Taylor joined Converse as a salesman in 1921 and suggested improvements for flexibility and ankle support.
The modern name emerged after Converse added Taylor’s signature to the ankle patch. By the early 1920s, the shoe was known as the Chuck Taylor All Star, making it one of the earliest widely recognized celebrity-endorsed athletic shoes. Its circular ankle patch and rubber toe cap became iconic details.
Chuck Taylors were originally basketball footwear, not merely lifestyle sneakers. Converse dominated much of the U.S. basketball market during the mid-20th century, but competition from newer performance shoes reduced their athletic role in the 1970s. They later became popular as casual, retro footwear. Nike acquired Converse in 2003.
