Nike created the limited-edition Air Mag inspired by Back to the Future.
The fictional self-lacing shoe appeared in the 1989 film Back to the Future Part II, where Marty McFly wore it during scenes set in 2015. Nike later produced real Air Mag versions, turning the film prop into a highly sought-after collector’s sneaker.
Nike released a small number of 2011 Air Mags through auction, with proceeds benefiting the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research. A later 2016 version included power-lacing technology and was distributed through a lottery and auction process.
The Air Mag is often confused with the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0. The HyperAdapt was a commercially sold self-lacing performance-inspired sneaker, while the Air Mag was a limited collectible directly based on the movie design. The two models share technological ideas but have different release histories.
