Which snack is traditionally made by frying thin slices of cassava in Brazil?

The story behind the answer

Mandioca frita is a Brazilian snack made by frying pieces or thin slices of cassava.

Cassava, also called manioc or yuca, is a starchy root that must be properly processed or cooked because some varieties contain cyanogenic compounds. In Brazilian cooking, the root is commonly boiled before being fried, producing a crisp outside and soft center.

The word mandioca is widely used in Brazil, while aipim and macaxeira are regional names for the same root. Mandioca frita is served as a snack, side dish, or accompaniment to grilled meats.

It should not be confused with pão de queijo, a baked cheese bread, or coxinha, a filled fried dough snack. Cassava fries also differ from potato fries in both flavor and botanical origin.
