Ferrero Rocher is the Italian confection containing a whole hazelnut inside hazelnut cream, wrapped in chocolate and chopped nuts.
Ferrero introduced Ferrero Rocher in 1982. The confection has several layers: a whole roasted hazelnut at the center, a surrounding hazelnut filling, a thin wafer shell, a chocolate coating, and chopped hazelnuts on the outside. It is commonly sold individually in a distinctive gold-colored foil wrapper.
The name refers to the Rocher de Massabielle, a rock formation at the Lourdes shrine in France. “Rocher” means “rock” in French, reflecting the confection’s rough, nut-covered exterior.
Ferrero Rocher is sometimes confused with Raffaello, another Ferrero product. Raffaello is a white coconut-covered confection with an almond center, while Ferrero Rocher is characterized by chocolate and hazelnut layers. The product is especially associated with gift boxes, holidays, and formal occasions in many markets.
