Frederick and Louis Rueckheim developed the snack in Chicago in the late nineteenth century. The product combines popcorn and peanuts with a sweet caramel coating that hardens into a crunchy shell. Its mixture of salty peanuts, airy popcorn, and sweet syrup helped make it distinctive among American packaged snacks.
Cracker Jack became especially associated with baseball through the song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” whose lyrics mention eating it. Beginning in the early twentieth century, boxes also became known for including prizes, which added a collectible element to the snack.
The product is different from kettle corn, which is generally cooked with sugar and salt but does not necessarily include peanuts or the same caramel coating. Cracker Jack’s familiar identity comes from the combination of caramel-coated popcorn, peanuts, and a prize tradition.
