Which small songbird migrates between Europe and Africa and is famous for singing at night?
Answer
European nightingale
Answer
European nightingale
The European nightingale migrates between Europe and Africa and is famous for singing at night.
It breeds across much of Europe and parts of western Asia, then migrates south to wintering areas in sub-Saharan Africa. The species prefers dense scrub, woodland edges, and tangled vegetation, where its brown plumage provides camouflage.
Male nightingales sing loudly and continuously during the breeding season. Their song contains many distinct phrases and can include whistles, trills, and rapid repetitions. Night singing may help males attract mates and defend territories when daytime sound is crowded by other birds.
Despite its reputation, the nightingale is not brightly colored and is easy to overlook. It is also different from the unrelated thrush nightingale, which has a similar name and overlapping range. Habitat loss and changes in farming landscapes have contributed to declines in several European populations.
